About Book:

Keeping the tradition to provide social justice and motto of “NO LESS, NO MORE BUT JUST EXACT”, the amalgamation of the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976 and the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985 is presented as The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (1 of 2010). All the sub-ordinate legislations made thereunder have also been incorporated in the book. A confusing definition of intra-State, inter-State trade and transactions and related Rules have been abrogated. A provision to get newer weights and measures, which our State Governments are unable to verify due to lack of proper technical backup, verified by Government approved centers has been added. This provision is likely to change the face of Legal Metrology Department.

Rapid advancement of science and technology with globalizations has made it necessary to include electronic weighing and measuring instruments. Testing procedures for the purpose of Approval of Models of such electronic instruments, detailed specifications for test conditions, sequence of conducting various tests are described in the Legal Metrology (General) Rules. As in the earlier book on this subject, this book also contains section by section technical comments, suggestions and court cases relevant to the section.

Large number of court cases and decisions of the High Courts have been cited. The author gratefully acknowledges the assistance obtained in citing the court cases from the book published by the Department of Legal Metrology, Government of Andhra Pradesh. Keeping in view the changed definition of the packaged commodity, a court case pertaining to goggles and spectacle frames has been cited. Some other court cases, in which prosecution failed, have also been cited. This has been done for the purpose of educating the authorities about their shortfall.
