Episode Background:
Though the Central Government’s move to withdraw Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in circulation on Nov. 8th 2016, may have shocked most people, however, how many of us are aware that the withdrawal of high-denomination rupee notes has been done at least twice in India’s history in the past? In this regard, it is interesting to note that in January 1946, Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000 banknotes were withdrawn. Moreover, in 1954, Rs 1,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 notes were reintroduced and were again demonetized in January 1978.
