Episode Background:
The Goods and Services Tax (GST), touted as one of the biggest and most radical economic reforms in Indian history, will be completing 3 years on June 30, 2020. Publicized as a ‘good and simple tax’, GST brought with it expectations of a simple, stable and transparent tax regime, which would result in an overall reduction in the prices of goods and services and facilitate barrier-free movement of goods across India. But the journey in the last 3 years has been a mixed bag!
It has been a roller coaster ride so far, with teething troubles in implementation & compliance now giving way to full blown litigation on legal/ technical issues. There have been a flood of writ petitions, advance rulings and a maze of complications while interpreting several provisions. Given all this, the GST Council has been on an overdrive, to be fair, and they have tried to be alive to industry concerns by taking some proactive decisions…yet, the single biggest question that remains unanswered is, 'Whether the promise of “One Nation, One Tax” has been fulfilled?'
Against this backdrop, Taxsutra is glad to present a special episode on “GST @ 3 – A Glass Half Full?..." in conjunction with tax & legal luminaries - Mr. V. Lakshmikumaran (Founder & Managing Partner - Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan), Adv. Rohan Shah, Adv. K. Vaitheeswaran and Mr. Pratik Jain (Partner and National Leader - Indirect Tax, PwC India).
