In 2019, the Ministry of Labour and Employment introduced four Bills on labour codes to consolidate 29 central laws into four (4) labour codes, namely,
i. The Code on Wages, 2019;
ii. The Code on Social Security, 2020;
iii. The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020; and
iv. The Industrial Relations Code, 2020.
While the Code on Wages, 2019 has been was passed by the Parliament and received the President's assent in August 2019. the three remaining labour codes i.e. The Code on Social Security, 2020, The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020; and The Industrial Relations Code, 2020, were passed by the Parliament on September 23, 2020 and thereafter received the President's assent on September 28, 2020.
The Centre has notified Draft Rules for three labour codes passed during the monsoon session of Parliament. These codes have been billed as a transformative exercise in improving industrial relations in India. These Draft Rules aimed are more precise and ironed out ambiguities.
