Interpretation of law has two essential purposes – One is to clarify to the people governed by it, the meaning of the letter of the law, and, the other is to shed light and give shape to the intent of the lawmaker. By interpretation is meant the process by which courts seek to ascertain the intention of the legislature . The very concept of interpretation connotes the introduction of the elements which are necessarily extrinsic to the words in the statute.
